Injured Carlos Alcaraz waiting on test results for right wrist injury as his French Open clock ticks

Defending two-time French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz has put his participation at the Grand Slam in doubt because of a right wrist injury.

Medical tests in the next few days will determine whether Alcaraz will be able to play in the tournament in a month.

The world No 2 was speaking after being named sportsman of the year at the Laureus awards on Monday.

"We'll see," said the seven-time Grand Slam champion, who pulled out of this week's Madrid Open. "The next [medical] test will be crucial," he told Spanish television channel TVE.

"We've been trying to do everything we can do to make sure that this test goes well. I'm trying to be very patient. But we are good, we are just waiting a little bit.

"We have a few tests in the next few days and then we will see how the injury is, and what the next steps will be."

Alcaraz withdrew from the Barcelona Open a day after he had his wrist treated during his opening match, a 6-4 6-2 victory over Otto Virtanen.

"For now, I've been trying to stay positive, to stay upbeat, even though these days have become a bit too long," said the 22-year-old Spaniard.

Aryna Sabalenka admitted to having "goosebumps" as she joined a roll of honour that includes not just Jennifer Capriati, Justine Henin, Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, but also Simone Biles, Fraser-Pryce, Annika Sörenstam and Lindsey Vonn in being named sportswoman of the year.

"When I see the list of winners from previous years, it makes me feel a little bit crazy to know that my name is going to be next to those legends - those athletes that I watched, I looked up to - but also, a little bit emotional and speechless right now. This is big," said the world No 1.

"In all the sports, there are so many great strong, powering, inspiring women who do incredible, inspiring things, and to receive this award means a lot."

The awards ceremony in the Spanish capital was hosted by tennis great Novak Djokovic and freestyle skier Eileen Gu.
