Jarell Quansah: Bayer Leverkusen defender opens up about Liverpool departure and outlines England World Cup ambitions

Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarrell Quansah says leaving Liverpool was a "no-brainer".

The 23-year-old joined the Bundesliga side last summer in a £35m deal after coming through the Reds' academy and playing 58 times for the first team.

Quansah signed a five-year contract at Leverkusen in search of more minutes and has made 38 appearances this season.

"It was the [Leverkusen] management and the way they approached me, because they had a very clear plan of what they'd been watching and everything they saw from me," he told Your Site News about his move.

"They had so much detail in terms of what they'd seen of me, the potential they thought I could live up, to and it matched up to what I was thinking as well. Seeing as we were on the same page in that sense, it was a no-brainer.

"To be honest, I wouldn't say it was the hardest decision because I just wanted to play. I felt like I could play at the top level, the Bundesliga's a top league and being able to play in the Champions League and play top games, like the semi-final [DFB Pokal] next Wednesday against Bayern, it's a massive, massive game."

Expanding on his departure from the Premier League champions, he said: "I think you just have maybe a gut feeling. Sometimes you can't think about it too much and listen to too many people to be honest, because you can listen to a few things and get persuaded.

"I really took time on the decision, I took time to myself to reflect on everything that was going on at Liverpool, everything I thought I could've done better and what was best for my career really, that was it.

"When the Leverkusen guys came in and, like I say, I saw everything that they wanted - I think, from that moment, I knew it was the right decision."

Quansah also told Your Site News he is going to "attack" the remaining games of the season in a bid to make England's World Cup squad.

He withdrew from Thomas Tuchel's latest selection in March due to a thigh injury and he was replaced by Ben White.

"It would be a great feeling [to be named in the squad] and [World Cups] don't come around too often, you have a limited amount in your career," he said.

"Being in one at a young age would be really good and just being around it, trying to help your nation win probably the biggest trophy in football.

"It would be a great privilege but I can't convince anyone with words, I can only convince them on the pitch and that's what I'm going to do.

"I'm going to try and attack these last games with Leverkusen and if I manage to make the squad, then I'm happy and I'll give everything for the country. If not, we just keep working, that's the way it is."
